Carla Esparza is an American professional mixed martial artist who competes in the Strawweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Carla Esparza was born on October 10, 1987, in Torrance, California, United States. Largely known for her grappling abilities, she was the first UFC Strawweight Champion, the first Invicta FC Strawweight Champion, and was generally considered the best strawweight fighter in the world while holding each title. Carla Esparza earned the UFC championship by winning a 16-woman tournament that was televised on the reality series The Ultimate Fighter. She also competed in Bellator MMA’s first women’s tournament. As of November 9, she is No 4 in the UFC women’s strawweight rankings.
Carla Esparza made her professional MMA debut on February 19, 2010, at RITC 3 – Respect in the Cage 3. She faced Cassie Trost, winning by TKO in Round 1. After the successful start of her professional MMA career, she had seven more fights – 5 wins (versus Karina Hallinan by rear-naked choke submission, Lacey Sears by rear-naked choke submission, Nina Ansaroff by split decision, Yadira Anzaldua by rear-naked choke submission, and Felice Herrig by unanimous decision) and 2 loses (versus Megumi Fujii by armbar submission, Jessica Aguilar by split decision).
On July 28, 2012, Carla Esparza debuted in Invicta FC 2 versus Sarah Schneider, winning by TKO in Round 2. She had 2 more fights in Invicta FC, winning both – versus Lynn Alvarez (by TKO) and Bec Rawlings (by rear-naked choke submission).
On March 14, 2015, Carla Esparza debuted in UFC versus Joanna Jedrzejczyk but lost by KO in Round 2. She had 10 more fights in the UFC.
