Liz Carmouche is an American MMA fighter, who currently competes in the Flyweight division of Bellator. Formerly, she competed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the Women’s Flyweight and Women’s Bantamweight divisions. At the time of her UFC departure, she was No 4 in the UFC women’s flyweight rankings.
Liz Carmouche was born on February 19, 1984, in Lafayette, Louisiana, United States, but grew up in Okinawa, Japan. Prior to becoming a professional MMA fighter, she spent five years in the Marine Corps as an aviation electrician during which she did three tours of duty in the Middle East.
Liz Carmouche made her professional MMA debut on March 13, 2010, versus Trudie Ginn at an Independent Event. She won by KO in Round 1 and took the eyes of the MMA fans and specialists. Same year, she continued her winning series versus Aleena Albertson at the Native Fighting Championship 5 by armbar submission in Round 2, versus Margarita de la Cruz Ramirez at UWC Mexico 7 – Evolution by TKO in Round 2, and Colleen Schneider at Strikeforce – Challengers 10 by unanimous decision.
One of the most remarkable wins, Liz Carmouche had was versus Valentina Shevchenko at C3 Fights – Red River Rivalry by TKO in Round 2. On November 19, 2010, she registered her sixth consecutive win versus Jan Finney at Strikeforce – Challengers 12 after TKO in Round 3. Thus, Liz Carmouche had 6 wins in professional MMA within just one year.
In 2011, however, her winning streak was stopped. She lost from Marloes Coenen at Strikeforce – Feijao vs. Henderson by triangle choke submission and from Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce – Challengers 17 by unanimous decision.
Despite this negative year, in 2012 she signed with Invicta FC and debuted on April 28 versus Ashleigh Curry at Invicta FC 1, winning by TKO in Round 2. On July 28, 2012, Liz Carmouche won her fight versus Kaitlin Young at Invicta FC 2 by rear-naked choke submission in Round 2.
In 2013, Liz Carmouche signed with the UFC and challenged Ronda Rousey for the Women’s Bantamweight title at UFC 157. The fight was on February 23 and in the early part of the first round, Liz Carmouche locked in a standing rear-naked choke/face crank on Ronda Rousey. However, Ronda Rousey escaped and eventually finished the fight by armbar with 11 seconds left in the first round.
However, despite the negative start, the career of Liz Carmouche in the UFC continued until 2019. She won fights versus Jessica Andrade (by TKO), Lauren Murphy (by unanimous decision), Katlyn Chookagian (by split), Jennifer Maia (by unanimous decision), and Lucie Pudilova (by unanimous decision), but lost from Alexis Davis, Miesha Tate, and Alexis Davis.
On August 10, 2019, she faced Valentina Shevchenko at UFC Fight Night 156. This was great revenge for Valentina Shevchenko, who won the fight by unanimous decision. This was the last fight of Liz Carmouche in the UFC.
In 2020, she signed with Bellator, debuting with a win by rear-naked choke submission versus DeAnna Bennett at Bellator 246. On April 9, 2021, Liz Carmouche won versus Vanessa Porto at Bellator 256 by unanimous decision.
